A high-protein diet is often recommended by bodybuilders and nutritionists to help efforts to build muscle and lose fat. Unlike the larger lipoprotein particles which deliver fat molecules to cells, HDL particles remove fat molecules from cells which need to export fat molecules. Lipoproteins are complex particles composed of multiple proteins which transport all fat molecules ( lipids ) around the body within the water outside cells. Some consume protein supplements after bodybuilding workouts, as they provide a quick and easily consumable protein source. High-density lipoproteins ( HDL ) are one of the five major groups of lipoproteins. This is important because atherosclerosis eventually results in sudden plaque ruptures, cardiovascular disease, stroke and other vascular diseases. This protein exchanges triglycerides of VLDL against cholesteryl esters of HDL. While adequate protein is required for building skeletal muscle and other tissues, there is ongoing debate regarding the use and necessity of high-protein diets in anaerobic exercise, in particular for weight training and bodybuilding. The remainder of the serum cholesterol after subtracting the HDL is the non-HDL cholesterol.

This can lead to discomfort if additional roughage is not added to the diet. HDL transports cholesterol mostly to the liver or steroidogenic organs such as adrenals, ovary, and testes by both direct and indirect pathways. Alternatively, meat, beans, or other high-protein foods are consumed.
